Day 21: How to Build an Essential Makeup Brush Kit

I always talk about makeup but what is equally important are the brushes you buy. But before you go crazy, grab the essentials first!

Foundation Brush

Use a flat-headed brush, such as a stippling brush, to give you a more natural finish with liquid or cream foundations. This brush will buff the makeup into your skin instead of allowing it to sit on your face. You can even use this stippling brush to apply cream blushes.

Furless Must Have Stippling Brush ($16.95)

Concealer Brush

Many people use their fingers to apply concealers but please avoid this. Your fingers hold bacteria so touching areas you want to conceal may lead to more problems later.  Find a concealer brush that is small and flat; a perfect size to conceal areas around the nose, eyes, and mouth. After concealing, you can use the brush to dab the concealer into place.

Afterglow Cosmetics Vegan Concealer Brush ($24.00)

Powder Brush

This brush can be used two different ways. If you prefer powder foundations, either loose or pressed, the large, fluffy brush can pick up a good amount of product and buff into the skin. You choose liquid or cream, this brush can be used to set your makeup.

EcoTools Large Powder Brush ($7.99)

Blush Brush

Soft and angled, a blush brush should have dense, large head. Might to gather an appropriate amount of powder, use short strokes to apply the product to your cheek and swipe towards your ear. A little goes a long way!

Lily Lolo Blush Brush ($14.00)

Eyeshadow Brush

You can easily get caught up buying 10 lid brushes, but the one you should have is the all-over lid brush. Round and compact, this brush is used to apply any loose or pressed eyeshadow.

Everyday Minerals Everyday Eye Shadow Brush ($10.00)

Eyeliner/Brow Brush

This has a double function (great money saver!). You can dip or swipe this small brush in any powder, cream, gel, or other formula to achieve that cat eye you always wanted or to fill in those sparse brows.

Bdellium Pink Bambu 760 Liner/Brow ($8.00)

Lip Brush

Try to find a lip brush that is small and steady. The smaller and steadier the better. You will have better control if the brush has these features. Also find a lip brush that can fit comfortably in your hand. You are bascially an artist!

Day 20: Match made in Heaven: Mani & Pedi

It is very convenient to match your fingers and toes. But why play it safe when you can have a combination with your mani & pedi?

Mani & Pedi Combo

  1. Textured & Solid. What is textured? Basically, a non-smooth finish. Ella+ Mila Nail Polish ($10.50) in Sunset Escape is a deep fiery orange with a bumpy texture when dried. For your toes, use a bright, creamy blue like LVX Nail Polish in Laguna ($18.00).
  2. Neon. The brighter-the better! Colour Raine Nail Polish in Drama Mama ($6.95) is a neon pink. To match, use a neon green like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Nail Polish in Deven Green ($10.00).
  3. Monochromatic. Mono- (Greek for “single, alone”) + -chromatic (Greek for “relation to color”). The goal is to find colors that are similiar, but not the same! Milani Color Statement Nail Lacquer in Imperial Purple ($3.99) is a violet while Zoya Nail Polish in Mira ($9.00) is a blue-toned, medium purple with dusty lavender tones.
  4. Pastel. Soft and muted colors look amazing on all skintones. Orly Nail Polish in Lemonade ($8.50) is a pastel cream yellow while Lillian Eve Nail Polish in Bliss ($12.00) is a soft plum cream.
  5. Complementary. If you remember art class, you probably remember the complementary colors (Red-Green; Blue-Orange; Purple-Yellow). These colors are naturally more pleasing together. For example, Furless Nail Polish in In Control ($12.00) is a bright red. Its conplementary color, green, is Sheswai Lacquer in Dig it ($10.00).
  6. Ivory & Ebony. My spin on the the traditional white and black combination, these are colors that off-white and almost black. Crabtree & Evelyn Nail Polish in Alabaster ($8.00) is described as a rich, creamy ivory with a bit of pearl shimmer. On the other end, Soulstice Nail Polish in Kiev ($8.00) is a deep garnet. It is so deep, the red, when applied more and more will appear black.

Day 19: Step-by-Step Guide for Better Nails

I use the Paula’s Choice 10 Steps to a Salon-Quality Manicure at Home for my nails. And what a big difference it has made!

So I wanted to share the step-by-step guide and add vegan or cruelty-free products to help you on your healthy nail journey.

National Novel Writing Month Day 18:How to Find the Right Nude Nail Color

Though, I promote color over neutral sometimes a nude nail is more appropriate. Maybe you want to tone it down for work or a subtle color for a date–whatever the reason a nude nail is a nice change without going completely bare.

As followed, nude nails do have their rules to bring out the best in you!

National Novel Writing Month Day 17: ROY G. BIV ROY G. BIV Nail Polish For Deeper Skintones

We are a lucky bunch! We can pull off most colors in either light or dark, bright or subtle. Experiment and see which color matches your personality. Personally, I am obsessed with blues (maybe because my birthstone is the sapphire…).

National Novel Writing Month Day 16: ROY G. BIV Nail Polish For Medium Skintones

National Novel Writing Month Day 15:Can I Wear Colored Eyeshadows?

With the hype of the neutral eye being ingrained in the everyday makeup routine, colored eyeshadows are left in the shadows (pun intended). Which is extremely sad since colored eyeshadows can add more depth and personality to your eyes.

I decided to find colored shadows for brown to dark brown eyes. The reason being: more than half of the world’s population has brown eyes and most individual with medium to deeper skin tones have a variation of brown eyes (i.e hazel). That is not to say people of darker skin cannot have blue, green, or gray eyes but because of the rarity I will stick to giving information for brown eyed people.

The best colors, BY FAR, that work well with brown eyes are blues, greens, and purples. Plus these colors look great on medium and dark skin so double win!

HINT: Determine your undertone. Cool to cool; Warm to warm.

National Novel Writing Month Day 14: Undereye Concealers

My grandma has them. My mom has them. And sadly, I am beginning to get them. However, I am obsessed with treating my dark circles with an eye cream and using healthier options to conceal them. My eyes are my favorite body part so I really want to keep the area looking young and beautiful.

Below are just 5 of the many different dark circle concealers floating about online. Personally, I have used TARTE’s concealer and found it to be one of my favorites. It is both moisturizing and highly-pigmented to hide any flaw.

National Novel Writing Month Day 12: The Fall Trend: Graphic Eyeliner

I wear a winged tip every DAY! At work, when shopping around town, at the bars; I feel naked if I don’t create a classic cat eye. But with many styles and shapes out there, you can be very flexible about look you want to go for.

Felt-tip eyeliners are designed for precise application without tugging or smudging. Most tips are fine so when pressed lightly you can keep the shape simple; press harder you can have a bolder look.
