8 Vegan + Cruelty-free Nude lipsticks for Darker Ladies

Nude lipsticks are essential! Whether you are going to work, to the mall, or a fancy dinner party, a flattering nude lip can make all the difference. While the “nude” is seen on many lipsticks, that can be misleading, especially for women with darker complexions.

Buzzfeed did an amazing job explaining why the word ‘nude’ can lead bronzy women down the wrong path of color selecting.

We found that colors that are actually marketed as nude are usually more fitting for white women than they are for women with brown skin tones. But, when we tried colors with brown names, like “java” and “coffee,” we had significantly better results.

As you can see, the lipstick labeled as “nude” did not bring out the beauty in these women. Most nude lipsticks are designed for women with lighter skintones but that doesn’t mean there aren’t nude lip shades for us. Below are just some of the best lippies in the vegan and cruelty-free world for you to enjoy whenever!

How to Wear Bold Lipstick Colors

When growing up my mom liked only three colors: black, white, and red. As a little girl, I couldn’t stand it! Nonetheless, as I gotten older I can appreciate my mom’s minimalist point of view, but I can’t help but love color! The world is full of them so why limit yourself with neutrals?

I find bright, bold colors speaking to me more. So here are some steps to help others find their favorite daring hue.

Step 1: Be aware of shades. EVERYONE can wear whatever color they want, but not all shades are created equal. Red can be broken down into orange-reds, cool blue-tone reds, muted reds, tomato reds, and etc. There are many different tones and shades out there, so don’t get discouraged when one shade doesn’t work for you!

Step 2: Lipliners are your friend. It keeps these colors from bleeding into the surrounding lip area. If you cannot find the liner in your color, try pencil eyeliners. They work just as well to keep the color strong.

Step 3: Keep the rest of your makeup plain. You want the attention on your lips; too makeup can look clown-like! So a flawless complexion, simple cat eye, nude blush or bronzer, and highlighter is all you need to feel done-up!

Step 4: The most important step of all: be confident! Yes, people will stare. It’s different and AMAZING! So head your head up and rock your lips!

When trying to find pinks, look for bright ones. The brightness of the pink will look amazing against any skintone that is Bronzy, Brown, or Black. If you need more help about which pinks to find, read my article about which shade works for each skintone and undertone.

For Example:

I had a friend who was convinced she couldn’t wear red lipstick. I gasped! Everyone can wear red! While finding the perfect red can be challenging–don’t give up! Here is a guide about finding the right red for you! In my opinion, blue-toned reds look great on every skintone and undertone.

For Example:

The color orange hands down looks amazing on darker skintones. Peaches and corals are fine but may be too light for deeper tones. So find lipsticks with words such as tangerine or pumpkin as a start.

For Example:

OH! YELLOW! Ok, I will admit this is not my favorite color but I figured to include it because someone might like it. If you have a warm undertone–try to find a deeper, cooler yellow. If you have a cool undertone, a warm, bright yellow will do you justice. I believe my yellow just matched my undertone too well; causing my complexion to look muddy. I don’t know. I just didn’t like this color. Sad, because I like wearing yellow in my wardrobe. 😦

For Example:

Yes! Green like nature! I am actually surprised how much I like green lipstick. I thought I would like a witch but if the green is deeper in color, I believe it would look more sophisticated than a bright, neon green.

For Example:

Blue is my favorite color! Actually, I think blues just look better on individuals with darker skintones. With that said, pick blues that are either labeled “royal blue” or “bright blue” that aren’t too light (i.e baby blue).

For Example:

Whether you are a plum or a true purple gal or guy, purple is a color to wear during the day or night. Find purples that are either bright or deep. I prefer my shades to be a deeper color, like an eggplant!

National Novel Writing Month Day 10: Best Pink Lip Color for Your Skin Tone

The last article discussing lip colors for your skintone and undertone! Today, we are looking for the perfect pink lipstick.

Pinks are flirty and fun, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have an edgy side. You can wear pinks with any style and any occasion just like the reds. In my lipstick pile, I have about 4 different shades of pink!

So join the club by using the chart below to determine which pink is right for you!

Pink lip color for Skin Tone

If your skintone is within the range of medium to tan:

  • and has a warm undertones like Kelly Rowland, select warm pinky-corals. Colourpop’s Lippie Stick in Rocket ($5.00) is a soft pink-coral that has a satin finish to make the color stand out against your skin.
  • and has a cool undertone similar to Rosario Dawson, use the rule for the warm undertones, choose colors that are a mix of coral and pink but with cooler shade to them. Lime Crime’s Lipstick in Geradium ($18.00) is a neon coral-pink.

Now onto the dark to deep skin tones (like myself!):

  • If your skintone is similar to Lupita Nyong’o with warm undertones, you want bright colors. You can totally rock them, since lighter colors might make you look ashy or dull. Stick to yellow or other warm undertones similiar to Ka’Oir’s lipstick in Mistress ($15.99); a deep hot pink.
  • If your skintone is closer to Venus William’s and has a cooler undertone, cooler tones are better (duh!). Wet N Wild Mega Last Lipstick in Don’t Blink Pink ($1.99) is the cooler cousin of Ka’oir’s Mistress. Great thing about this lipstick–it is BUDGET-FRIENDLY!

National Novel Writing Month Day 9: Best Peach/Coral Lip Color for Your Skin Tone

Peach, coral, and oranges are in the same color family. But while some individuals can wear a peachy color, some look better with a pure orange shade.

Personally, most corals are wore in the summer time for a fresh look but why regret fun colors for the winter time!

If your skintone is within the range of medium to tan:

  • and has a warm undertones like Solange, select corals with yellow undertones to them. The goal is to find corals with warm undertones to match your warm complexion. Zuzu Luxe Lipstick in Siren ($19.10) is a medium shade coral with gold flecks to make you sparkle.
  • and has a cool undertone similar to Jennifer Hudson, you can rock cool corals with a rosy pink undertone to them. E.L.F Mineral Lipstick in Cool Coral ($5.00) is the perfect blend of coral, orange, and pink.

Now onto the dark to deep skin tones (like myself!):

Next to the red lip; the nude or neutral lip is the next best thing. You can wear it day or night; dressed up or casually. But the problem many women of color face is finding the right nude–especially women with deep to bronze skin. Nudes are seen as too light when applied or too matchy. This can cause you to look either sickly or clownish.

To combat this issue, you have to find nudes that complement your skin tone and undertone–not match it! You want your lips to stand out, not blend in!

Below is a chart to help you find the perfect nude all your skin tone and undertone!

Nude Lip for Skintone

If your skintone is within the range of medium to tan:

  • and has a warm undertones like Halle Berry, find a nude that has warm beige, caramel, or peach colors. Medium skin can fall into the matchy-matchy nude zone. We want your lips to make a statement; not blend into your skin. Milani’s Color Statement Lipstick  in Bahama Beige($5.99) is a creamy, warm beige brown.
  • and has a cool undertone similar to Rosario Dawson, choose colors that have a rosy pink shade to them. Similar to the warm undertones, don’t be tempted to choose a nude that completely matches your skin. Paula’s Choice Sheer Cream Lipstick In the Nude ($11.00) is a nude rose that glides on sheer for a everyday-to-night look.

Now onto the dark to deep skin tones (like myself!):

National Novel Writing Month Day 7: Best Red Lip Color For Your Skin Tone

Who doesn’t like a red lip? It is a classic color and goes well with everything and you can wear it for any occassion.

Just like my article for the berry group, not all reds are created equal. You should consider your skintone and undertone to find the perfect red.

Day 6: Lip Care 101

Winter is right around the corner for some of us. This means cold and dry air! Sadly, as most of us prepare our facial skin for the winter months, some of us don’t take the same precautions to our lips. Dry and chapped lips doesn’t look the best when you are trying to rock the latest matte color this season.

So here are some easy tips to help those cracked lips!

TIP #1: Do not lick your lips. THIS IS VERY TEMPTING, I know. But your saliva, when drying, will only take more moisture away.

TIP #2: Scrub it away! Instead of picking and licking at the dead skin, use a lip scrub in the shower to refresh the lips. You can either create your own scrub or purchase a small jar like LUSH’s Popcorn Lip Scrub ($9.95).

TIP #3: Please, please, PLEASE stay away from petroleum or petroleum-based lip balms. Growing up, I always had one of those small jars of Vaseline in my reach. Heck, Carmex too. It was cheap! But petroleum is a byproduct of the oil industry. Not only is petroleum not good for the environment; but when it comes to your lips “it’s water-repellant and not water-soluble, meaning it merely seals the barrier so that moisture does not leave the skin. So while you might feel the instant gratification of a softened surface, you’re actually drying out your pores by keeping out air and moisture.” So what can you use instead? Products containing beeswax (non-vegan), coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter and cocoa butter are better at sealing moisture in AND moisturizing.

Below are some examples of great lip balm out there!
