20 Best Vegan + Cruelty-free Foundations for Women of Color

Being a Women of Color, I have experienced a lot of heartache when choosing foundations. My foundations are either too light, too dark, too ashy, too SOMETHING. But my biggest problem is finding companies that carry my shade at all. Even though it is 2017, there are still companies that do not carry a diversity of shades or tones. To make matters worse, many vegan and cruelty-free lines do not even bother to add deeper colors, leaving Women and Men of Color little to no choice but to use foundations created funky chemicals.

But does that mean there aren’t ANY companies making shades for Women and Men of Color? OF COURSE THEY ARE!

Below are 20 companies I have researched or used that I believe have a lovely selection of shades to fit anyone and everyone.

Happy Shopping!

5 Vegan+Cruelty-free Tinted Setting Powders for Dark/Deep Skin

Have you ever taken a photo and realized you look lighter or ashy? Well, you have experience what is known as the “flashback”. While you might have looked flawless earlier, the camera’s flash will show color differentiations. For any chocolate beauties out there, you know the reason behind the flashback is using either too light of a foundation and/or no-color/translucent setting powder.

While no-color/translucent powders are described to match all skintones, the reality is these powders are meant for lighter skin complexions. The powder is usually pearly white. Thus when blended onto deeper skintones, the natural chocolate tones will appear from under the white cast.

But do not get discouraged! A simple way to fix this is to purchase finishing or setting powders that are tinted, but yet sheer enough so your foundation color is left unchanged.

Below are some great setting powders to try for all shades within the spectrum.

Day 20: Match made in Heaven: Mani & Pedi

It is very convenient to match your fingers and toes. But why play it safe when you can have a combination with your mani & pedi?

Mani & Pedi Combo

  1. Textured & Solid. What is textured? Basically, a non-smooth finish. Ella+ Mila Nail Polish ($10.50) in Sunset Escape is a deep fiery orange with a bumpy texture when dried. For your toes, use a bright, creamy blue like LVX Nail Polish in Laguna ($18.00).
  2. Neon. The brighter-the better! Colour Raine Nail Polish in Drama Mama ($6.95) is a neon pink. To match, use a neon green like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Nail Polish in Deven Green ($10.00).
  3. Monochromatic. Mono- (Greek for “single, alone”) + -chromatic (Greek for “relation to color”). The goal is to find colors that are similiar, but not the same! Milani Color Statement Nail Lacquer in Imperial Purple ($3.99) is a violet while Zoya Nail Polish in Mira ($9.00) is a blue-toned, medium purple with dusty lavender tones.
  4. Pastel. Soft and muted colors look amazing on all skintones. Orly Nail Polish in Lemonade ($8.50) is a pastel cream yellow while Lillian Eve Nail Polish in Bliss ($12.00) is a soft plum cream.
  5. Complementary. If you remember art class, you probably remember the complementary colors (Red-Green; Blue-Orange; Purple-Yellow). These colors are naturally more pleasing together. For example, Furless Nail Polish in In Control ($12.00) is a bright red. Its conplementary color, green, is Sheswai Lacquer in Dig it ($10.00).
  6. Ivory & Ebony. My spin on the the traditional white and black combination, these are colors that off-white and almost black. Crabtree & Evelyn Nail Polish in Alabaster ($8.00) is described as a rich, creamy ivory with a bit of pearl shimmer. On the other end, Soulstice Nail Polish in Kiev ($8.00) is a deep garnet. It is so deep, the red, when applied more and more will appear black.

National Novel Writing Month Day 15:Can I Wear Colored Eyeshadows?

With the hype of the neutral eye being ingrained in the everyday makeup routine, colored eyeshadows are left in the shadows (pun intended). Which is extremely sad since colored eyeshadows can add more depth and personality to your eyes.

I decided to find colored shadows for brown to dark brown eyes. The reason being: more than half of the world’s population has brown eyes and most individual with medium to deeper skin tones have a variation of brown eyes (i.e hazel). That is not to say people of darker skin cannot have blue, green, or gray eyes but because of the rarity I will stick to giving information for brown eyed people.

The best colors, BY FAR, that work well with brown eyes are blues, greens, and purples. Plus these colors look great on medium and dark skin so double win!

HINT: Determine your undertone. Cool to cool; Warm to warm.

Eyeshadow for Brown Eyes

  1. Blues
    1. Lily Lolo in Blue Lagoon $12.00 (A Sparkly Medium Blue)
    2. Orglamix in Obsidian $11.10 (A Shimmery Blackened Blue)
  2. Greens
    1. NYX Hot Single Eye Shadow in Dank $4.50 (A Satin Light Green)
    2. Milani Bella Eyes Gel Powder Eyeshadow in Bella Khaki $4.49 (A Shimmering Dark Green)
  3. Purples
    1. Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Flash $19 (A Satin Finish Purple)
    2. Etherealle Eyeshadow in Belladonna $7.95 (A Matte Eggplant Purple Eyeshadow)

National Novel Writing Month Day 12: The Fall Trend: Graphic Eyeliner

I wear a winged tip every DAY! At work, when shopping around town, at the bars; I feel naked if I don’t create a classic cat eye. But with many styles and shapes out there, you can be very flexible about look you want to go for.

Felt-tip eyeliners are designed for precise application without tugging or smudging. Most tips are fine so when pressed lightly you can keep the shape simple; press harder you can have a bolder look.

National Novel Writing Month Day 9: Best Peach/Coral Lip Color for Your Skin Tone

Peach, coral, and oranges are in the same color family. But while some individuals can wear a peachy color, some look better with a pure orange shade.

Personally, most corals are wore in the summer time for a fresh look but why regret fun colors for the winter time!

Peach-Coral-Orange Lipstick for Skintone

If your skintone is within the range of medium to tan:

  • and has a warm undertones like Solange, select corals with yellow undertones to them. The goal is to find corals with warm undertones to match your warm complexion. Zuzu Luxe Lipstick in Siren ($19.10) is a medium shade coral with gold flecks to make you sparkle.
  • and has a cool undertone similar to Jennifer Hudson, you can rock cool corals with a rosy pink undertone to them. E.L.F Mineral Lipstick in Cool Coral ($5.00) is the perfect blend of coral, orange, and pink.

Now onto the dark to deep skin tones (like myself!):

National Novel Writing Month Day 8: Best Nude Lipstick for Your Skintone

Next to the red lip; the nude or neutral lip is the next best thing. You can wear it day or night; dressed up or casually. But the problem many women of color face is finding the right nude–especially women with deep to bronze skin. Nudes are seen as too light when applied or too matchy. This can cause you to look either sickly or clownish.

To combat this issue, you have to find nudes that complement your skin tone and undertone–not match it! You want your lips to stand out, not blend in!

Below is a chart to help you find the perfect nude all your skin tone and undertone!

Nude Lip for Skintone

If your skintone is within the range of medium to tan:

  • and has a warm undertones like Halle Berry, find a nude that has warm beige, caramel, or peach colors. Medium skin can fall into the matchy-matchy nude zone. We want your lips to make a statement; not blend into your skin. Milani’s Color Statement Lipstick  in Bahama Beige($5.99) is a creamy, warm beige brown.
  • and has a cool undertone similar to Rosario Dawson, choose colors that have a rosy pink shade to them. Similar to the warm undertones, don’t be tempted to choose a nude that completely matches your skin. Paula’s Choice Sheer Cream Lipstick In the Nude ($11.00) is a nude rose that glides on sheer for a everyday-to-night look.

Now onto the dark to deep skin tones (like myself!):

Eyebrows on Fleek: Brow 101

Eyebrow History

Our eyebrows have changed a lot throughout the last century. From the 1920s ultrathin, droopy brow to the overplucked trend in the 1990s, thankfully today in 2015, our eyebrows are meant to be face-fitting, natural, and bold!

f_july_multitask_lrg2Like our eyebrows, the products to produce the trends changed and grew. Women and men now have  many choices to create their perfect eyebrow.
