8 Vegan + Cruelty-free Nude lipsticks for Darker Ladies

Nude lipsticks are essential! Whether you are going to work, to the mall, or a fancy dinner party, a flattering nude lip can make all the difference. While the “nude” is seen on many lipsticks, that can be misleading, especially for women with darker complexions.

Buzzfeed did an amazing job explaining why the word ‘nude’ can lead bronzy women down the wrong path of color selecting.

We found that colors that are actually marketed as nude are usually more fitting for white women than they are for women with brown skin tones. But, when we tried colors with brown names, like “java” and “coffee,” we had significantly better results.

As you can see, the lipstick labeled as “nude” did not bring out the beauty in these women. Most nude lipsticks are designed for women with lighter skintones but that doesn’t mean there aren’t nude lip shades for us. Below are just some of the best lippies in the vegan and cruelty-free world for you to enjoy whenever!

National Novel Writing Month Day 11: Eyeshadow Palettes

I remember when the Urban Decay NAKED palette hit the market. Every blogger and pinterest board out there had a tutorial about how to accomplish the perfect smokey eye. While Urban Decay (a cruelty-free and vegan company) has evolve their palettes, other companies have jumped on the bandwagon and created their own. Luckily, some of these companies are vegan and/or cruelty-free so beauties like us can partake in the eye game!

Palettes have an advantage to single eyeshadow colors. They usually follow a color scheme so you can custom design your look at an affordable price and they are travel-friendly.

Here are some palettes out there in the vegan and cruelty-free community.

Eyeshadow Palettes

  1. Viseart Eyeshadow Palette ($80.00) in Dark Matte are “rich shades to add an extra depth of color to any eye look. Navies and wines add definition to a smoky eye, while rich browns and oranges deepen golden and champagne eye looks”. This company has 6 other eyeshadow palettes for all styles (Neutral Matte,Bridal Satin,Sultry Muse, Paris Nude, Cool Matte, Bright Editorial). These products are not tested on animals, contain organic ingredients, and they are free of silicone, petrochemicals, and mineral oil.
  2. Red Apple Lipstick City Depth ($133.00) from their City Palette (City Matte, City Color, City Nude, City Stater) series “blends mattes with velvety shimmers to create a neutral palette that’s far from bland. This palette utilizes grey undertones to help you create stunning professional looks or sultry smokey eyes. Grey is the ultimate neutral, it pairs well with all hair colors and eye colors – you can’t go wrong”. Though expensive, reviewers have stated you will use all the colors to create 3 eye looks. All their palettes are vegan, gluten-free, corn-free, and GMO-free along with nasties that are removed!
  3. TARTE Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Palette ($45.00) has 12 unique colors to create any soft or sultry eye look. Best of all, all the colors are matte! Formulated without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates, & gluten this palette is amazing! I personally have this palette and love it! I am not a big fan with shimmer eyes for work so I wear these colors for my professional look.
  4. Pacifica Enlighten Eye Brightening Shadow Palette ($14.00) is budget-friendly and sexy. With “rich, lasting, creaseless eye shadows that are infused with coconut water for a velvety, cream-like finish” these colors  can create a golden, purple smokey eye! But if you are looking for a blue smokey eye, try their Mystical Supernatural Eye Shadow. Formulated without: Phthalates, parabens, carmine, beeswax, lanolin, mineral oils, propylene glycol, petroleum and FD& C colors; Vegan and Gluten-free.
  5. Lily Lolo Smoke & Mirrors Eye Palette ($34.00) is an 8 pigment palette with shadows ranging from shimmer to matte textures. These soft colors can be used during the day, but can be built upon to make a more dramatic look for your night look. Lily Lolo also has another palette (The Laid Bare) if you are looking for a more neutral eye. Does not contain chemicals, bismuth, talc, or dyes (FD&C, Lake). It is also vegan, GMO-free, gluten Free, & organic.

National Novel Writing Month Day 7: Best Red Lip Color For Your Skin Tone

Who doesn’t like a red lip? It is a classic color and goes well with everything and you can wear it for any occassion.

Just like my article for the berry group, not all reds are created equal. You should consider your skintone and undertone to find the perfect red.

Red lip for Skintone-Undertone

If your skintone is within the range of medium to tan:

Now onto the dark to deep skin tones (like myself!):

Remember: lip liner is your friend!

Red lips can be worn either with a bold smokey eye or a bare lid with a cat eye; it’s totally up to you!

Plum Lipsticks for Darker Cruelty-free & Vegan Ladies

Personally, fall is my favorite season. I love seeing the richer, deeper colors of green, orange, red, and yellow in fashion and makeup. I especially love fall because this means darker lip colors.

Like choosing other lip colors, determining your skin tone and undertone is important so your skin doesn’t look dull or gray–but radiant and flawless.

If your skintone is within the range of medium to tan:

  • and has a warm undertones like Halle Berry or Kelly Rowland–chose a lipstick with a rich reddish-purple color (think wine!) or a burgundy. Because you are warm, a blue-tone berry lipstick will blend well with your undertone and whiten your teeth.  Like this dark berry, maroon lipstick by Aromi *.
  • and has a cool undertone similar to Rosario  Dawson or Jennifer Hudson, mauve lipsticks with pink or rose undertones are perfect. Ecco Bella’s lipstick in Rosewood * is a mauve shade with slight pink undertones.

Now onto the dark to deep skin tones (like myself!):

  • If your skintone is similar to Lupita Nyong’o’s or Gabby Union’s with warm undertones, search for lipsticks that are similar to wine colors–rich and dark. For example, Red Apple’s Wine and Dandy * is awesome! This deep, wine lip color with purple undertones will bring out your golden hues without being overpowering.
  • If your skintone is closer to Alek Wek’s or Uzo Aduba’s and has a cooler undertone, bright lip colors of magenta or violet look great on you. Even dark reds with chocolate-brown tones within them look amazing on you too! But because of the contrast between the deep, dark tone of your skin and the lipstick–I believe Lime Crime’s lipstick in Poisonberry * is just the bright and bold lipstick your skin tone wants!

Lipliner is your friend!

Because your lips are darker, choose a more natural eye or blush color.
